JAKARTA - An international charity that focuses on providing clean water, sanitation and hygiene, WaterAid, which is spread across 34 countries, is back to mobilizing clean water supplies.
Marking Ramadan 2021, WaterAid invites Muslims to give a tithe to help provide clean water for several areas in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Mali that have difficulty getting clean water.
By cooperating with Islamic religious experts, an international charity that was first established in England in 1981, designed the invitation in accordance with the principles of zakat.
Muslims can choose which countries nominated for international charities to support, with the confidence that every penny they donate will go straight to those in need.
"We are pleased to launch this Ramadan zakat call, enabling the Muslim community to help transform lives around the world with clean water, proper toilets, and good hygiene through projects that meet zakat requirements", WaterAid Communications and Fundraising Director Marcus Missen, cited from The National News.
"Gaining access to human rights can provide the first step out of poverty, improve health, education, and livelihoods for the entire community and help build our resilience to climate change", he continued.
To note, one in five schools in Bangladesh do not have access to clean water or proper toilets and washing facilities. Meanwhile, climate change has hit Pakistan harder than most countries, causing widespread drought and people with difficulty accessing clean water.
As for Mali, as one of the poorest and warmest countries in the world, sixty percent of the population does not have access to proper toilets and four million people do not have access to clean water.
