Mexico City - The Mexican government has lifted a tsunami warning that was previously issued after a magnitude 7.3 earthquake hit off the coast of Chiapas state.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) recorded a magnitude 4.7 earthquake in the Gulf of Tehuantepec, about 37.3 miles or about 60 kilometers southwest of Aquiles Serdan, Chiapas on Friday, July 17.
About an hour later, a magnitude 7.3 earthquake occurred in the same area.
As reported by ANTARA from Sputnik, the Tsunami Warning Center of the Mexican Navy Secretariat stated that based on the results of data analysis and sea level observations along the Mexican Pacific coast and the area around the epicenter, no significant changes in sea level were expected.
"Based on the information that has been analyzed and the results of sea level observations along the Pacific coast of Mexico as well as coastal areas near the epicenter of the earthquake, no significant changes are expected. Therefore, the tsunami warning for the Pacific region of Mexico is lifted," said the Tsunami Warning Center bulletin.
Previously, the center urged the public to stay away from the coastal area until the official warning was lifted because waves up to about 3.3 feet or about one meter were expected to reach the coastline.
The Mexican National Civil Protection Coordination (CNPC) through the X platform reported that after the main earthquake occurred, two other earthquakes were recorded in Chiapas, one in the southwest of Huixtla and one in the north of Mapastepec, with magnitudes of 5.2 and 6.1.
CNPC added that so far 60 aftershocks have been recorded.
In a separate statement, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged the public to follow all directions issued by the CNPC.
He said the government continued to assess the potential damage to buildings to coordinate the necessary preventive measures.
