JAKARTA - Mohsen Rezaei, a senior military adviser to the Supreme Leader of Iran and former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), now has a position in Iran's security decision-making center amid the ongoing conflict with the US.

Iran asset release
Rezaei said the path to peace could begin with US President Donald Trump's move to liquidate Tehran's assets, which are estimated to be worth 24 billion US dollars.
Trump then agreed to release Iran's funds and assets under a short-lived Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at paving the way for peace talks.
The deal was signed in June but fell apart within days.
War of expansion
Rezaei warned Iran would "drag the war" outside the Persian Gulf if the conflict continued. "We will give this war a new dimension by attacking other American bases," he said.
Since the interview, the conflict has widened. Saudi Arabia launched an attack on Iranian-backed Houthi group targets in Yemen.
Meanwhile, the Houthis launched an attack on Saudi infrastructure and threatened to disrupt shipping in and around the Red Sea.
Iranian-backed groups in Iraq also remain involved in this wider conflict. During the war, Tehran reportedly fired missiles as far as Diego Garcia, a US-British joint military base about 2,000 miles from Iran.
Reiterating Iran's claim over the Strait of Hormuz: Rezaei said Iran and Oman have sovereignty over the waterway and will therefore manage it together.
Since then, Tehran and Muscat have been negotiating on navigation in the strait and have hinted that an agreement may be reached.
However, Iranian officials stressed that any agreement does not necessarily mean that the waterway will be immediately reopened.
Threat of invasion into US territory
Rezaei warned Iran was ready for a possible ground invasion by the US, saying, "our ground forces are many times greater than our missile forces."
