China Accuses British Intelligence MI6 Of Recruiting Two Government Staff As Spy

JAKARTA - China's Ministry of State Security in a statement Monday accused the UK Secret Intelligence Service of MI6 of recruiting two staff members from unnamed Chinese state agencies as spies for the British Government.

The ministry said the case against the two spies, a married couple, was being investigated further.

In a statement, the Chinese ministry said spies with the surname Wang studied in the UK in 2015, under an exchange program and had been invited to a secretly arranged dinner and tour by MI6 during the period.

Wang is said to have "strong intentions to earn money" and was persuaded to work as a part-time consultant with high wages, before MI6 personnel approached him to work to serve the British Government in exchange for greater money and security. He agreed.

After espionage training, MI6 ordered Wang to return to the Bamboo Curtain country to gather important information related to the Chinese government.

The ministry, said MI6 also persuaded Wang to invite his wife, who works in the "government core unit", for double the fee. The wife, surnamed Zhou, finally agreed.

It is known, China and Britain have accused each other of months on suspicion of spying that threatens each other's national security.

In January, China uncovered a case of espionage, in which they said MI6 used foreigners in China to gather secrets and information.

In contrast, Britain in April charged two people with providing harmful information to China. Last month, they charged three people on charges of helping the service
