BANYUWANGI - The police uncovered a syndicate that circulated counterfeit foreign currency worth trillions of rupiah. There were 10 people arrested.

The head of the Banyuwangi Police, Grand Commissioner Arman Asmara Syarifuddin, said that the police had previously uncovered the circulation of counterfeit foreign currency in a hotel in Banyuwangi. The arrest was made during a sale and purchase transaction with evidence of counterfeit bills which, for example, was in real money amounting to IDR 2.8 trillion.

"Today, the results of the development of the police have again secured evidence of counterfeit foreign currency of IDR 1.7 trillion. The findings of evidence of counterfeit foreign currency (allegedly) of IDR 1.7 trillion are based on the results of a case development that was previously uncovered," he said as quoted by Antara, Monday, March 1.

Evidence of foreign currency from the latest development, namely 100 pieces of 1 million Euro denominations and 100 pieces of Yuan (China). The Euro currency displays the validity period from 1999 to 2000 in 15 countries.

This evidence of counterfeit foreign currency is the result of previous disclosures. The police will check with the consulate generals of foreign countries whose currency is used by the syndicates.

"We still have to check whether this is a category of money that can be spent or just a display. Later we will consult with the Chinese Consulate General in Surabaya," he said.

The Head of the Banyuwangi Police Department said that until now the police were still hunting down other suspects who were suspected of being dealers or sellers. Because the suspects admitted that they only bought this foreign money from someone in Jakarta.

Meanwhile, the 10 people who were arrested came from different areas. They are suspected of carrying out their actions in a number of areas of East Java and West Java.
