The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) said there was a significant change in both the color of lake water and the distribution of sulfur in the crater lake of Mount Kelimutu in Ende Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

"From visual and instrumental monitoring, there has been a significant change in the water color of the Crater I lake as well as the dynamics and distribution of sulfur on the surface of Kawah II lake water which is almost evenly spread over the edge of the lake water surface," said Head of the Kelimutu Volcano Observation Post, Irwan Ka Uman, quoted by ANTARA, Friday, June 7.

He explained that the results of visual observations indicated that rock solubility occurred in Crater I and an increase in the magmatic fluid to the surface as indicated by the distribution of sulfur on the surface of the crater lake.

Furthermore, the expansion of sulfur deposits on the surface of the water at Kawah II lake shows an increase in the activity of the magnesium-hydrothermal system below it.

In addition to changing the color of the crater lake water, the intensive distribution of sulfur is supported by increased seismicity indicating a supply of magma to the surface.

For now, Irwan said the potential danger threat of Mount Kelimutu is the phreatic and magmatic eruptions that produce material ejections within a radius of 250 meters.

"Rain of ash can occur with distance and intensity depending on the direction and speed of the wind," he said.

With this potential hazard, the Geological Agency still maintains the level of volcanic activity at Level II or Alert.

People or visitors are also recommended not to be around the crater area within a radius of 250 meters from the crater edge.

"The public is also advised to remain calm," he advised.

Mount Kelimutu is a strato-type volcano that has three crater lakes, namely Kawah I (Tiwu Ata Polo), Kawah II (Tiwu Koofai Nuwamuri), and Kawah III (Tiwu Ata Bupu).
