Minister Of Health Budi Sadikin: PPDS Hospital Based On Crisis Issues Specialist Doctors

JAKARTA - Minister of Health (Menkes) Budi Gunadi Sadikin said that the existence of a Specialist Doctor Education Program (PPDS) based on the Main Organizer Education Hospital or Hospital Based is a strategy to overcome the problem of a specialist doctor shortage in Indonesia.

"So there is a lot of lack (of specialist doctors in Indonesia). So, that's why we want to build a Hospital Based," said Minister of Health Budi to reporters after attending the National Working Conference of the Indonesian Toraks and Cardiovascular Surgery Association (HBTKVI) 2025 themed "Towards Continuation of Transformation for Toraks, Kardiak, and National Vascalar" in Jakarta, Antara, Sunday, February 16.

Currently, said Minister of Health Budi, Indonesia is still faced with the problem of lack of specialist doctors, such as toraks and cardiovascular surgeons.

Toraks and cardiovascular surgeons are specialist doctors who treat diseases in the inner organs of the chest cavity, especially the heart and lungs. This specialist doctor also has expertise in diagnosing, giving drugs, and doing treatment by means of surgery.

"So I ask for your understanding, let's increase the number of people, reduce their knowledge, spread their knowledge. Don't worry about running out of patients," he said.

Previously, Budi had said that PPDS Based on the Main Organizer Education Hospital would prioritize local male doctors as participants in specialist doctor education at educational hospitals.

"Later, the fulfillment of specialist doctors to all regions will be carried out together, both education through universities and hospital-based education," he said.

At least, there are six educational hospitals in question, namely Mata Cicendo Hospital, Soeharso Ortopedi Hospital, National Brain Center Hospital (PON), Dharmais Cancer Hospital, Harapan Kita Hospital, and Harapan Kita RSPD.

By implementing the RSP-Based Specialist Specialist Education Program, said Minister of Health Budi, it is hoped that Indonesia can shorten the fulfillment of the needs of specialist doctors from 10 years to about five years.
