JAKARTA - Head of the Food, Maritime, and Agriculture Security Agency (DKPKP) Suharini Eliawati said that her party would rehabilitate coral reefs in the Thousand Islands in 2023.

In this case, the DKI Provincial Government will carry out a transplant in the form of grafting or cutting live coral to be placed in other locations that are damaged in order to create new coral reef habitats.

Coral reef transplantation will be carried out in 2023 with a budget proposed in the 2023 Regional Work Plan (RKPD) of IDR 2.9 billion.

Suharini said, this coral reef transplant activity was a follow-up activity that had been delayed by two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our hope is that from the 144 hectares that were conserved over the past five years, our fish have started to grow and our sea views have started to recover. And next year we will start this coral transplant activity,” said Suharini in a working meeting with the DKI DPRD, Monday, May 30.

In addition to transplanting coral reefs, Suharini said that her party will make a priority program for coaching seaweed cultivators in the Thousand Islands region.

"In 2023, apart from transplanting coral reefs, we will also provide guidance to seaweed farmers, including Pramuka Island, Tidung Kecil Island, Tidung Besar Island, and Lancang Island," she said.

In response, the Head of Commission B of the DKI Jakarta DPRD, Ismail, said that the plan to restore marine ecosystems in the Thousand Islands needs to be carried out with careful planning.

Ismail said, DKPKP needs to synergize with the DKI Tourism and Creative Economy Office (Disparekraf) to promote this marine tourism destination.

"It is hoped that if this is executed properly, it can become a tourist destination. So that later it can become an added value for the Thousand Islands," said Ismail.
