Playing 2 Times In A Day Doesn't Stop Iga Swiatek From Winning The Warsaw Open 2023

JAKARTA - Tennis player Iga Swiatek won the Warsaw Open 2023 tournament even though he had to play a semifinal and final match on the same day, Sunday, July 30, Poland time.

Amazingly, the world number one has only lost one point in the final against Laura Siegemund. He won two straight sets, 6-0 and 6-1.

"I want to put everything in and do it. I'm quite happy to have done it," Swiatek said in his winning speech, quoted from AFP via Antara, Monday, July 31.

The rain that flushed the tournament area made Swiatek start Friday, July 28, playing its quarter-finals, and managed to secure a place in the semifinals to meet Yanina Wickmayer.

Swiatek took the 5-1 lead in the second set, and had three match points before the Belgians got up. The match was then stopped and resumed on Sunday, July 30.

As the match continued, the Polish player squandered two more match points in the tiebreak before winning 6-1, 7-6 (8/6).

In the final that took place on the same day, Swiatek won the first nine games and never faced a break point as he beat non-seeded German player Siegemund.

"It's not easy playing in Warsaw, but I'm very happy that we can manage and do everything we can today, after a pretty tiring day yesterday," Swiatek said.

Siegemund spent more than six hours on the pitch on Saturday (29/7) as he beatLA Stefanini and then compatriot Tatjana Maria, both in three sets, to reach the first final since 2017.

"Sorry I couldn't do more fighting today, because there were too many yesterday," Siegemund said.
