JAKARTA - The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has officially set a 50 percent discount for electricity tariffs for household customers of PT PLN (Persero) with a power of up to 2,200 VA.

"To maintain purchasing power and improve people's welfare, the government provides an electricity cost stimulus which is part of an incentive package in the economic sector, in the form of a 50 percent discount on electricity costs to household customers of PT PLN (Persero) with an electrical installed power of up to 2,200 VA which targets 81.42 million customers," said Director General of Electricity at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Jisman P. Hutajulu in Jakarta, quoted by Antara, Tuesday, December 31.

In accordance with the Decree of the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Number 348.K/TL.01/MEM.L/2024 concerning the Discount of Electricity Costs for Household Consumers of PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (Persero), a 50 percent discount is given to household customers of PT PLN (Persero) with 450 VA, 900 VA, 1,300 VA, and 2,200 VA power which is valid for two months, namely January and February 2025.

"The discount on electricity costs is carried out automatically through the PLN system," said Jisman.

Postpaid customers get a 50 percent discount from the electricity cost account for usage in January 2025 (which will be paid in February 2025) and for usage in February 2025 (which will be paid in an account in March 2025).

Meanwhile, prepaid customers are given a direct discount when purchasing electricity tokens in January and February 2025, so that people can simply pay a token price of half the previous month's purchase to get the same kWh.

"People are also expected to use electrical energy more efficiently and wisely to support energy independence," said Jisman.

During the implementation of the discount on electricity costs, Jisman emphasized that the Government asked PT PLN (Persero) to remain obliged to provide optimal service to consumers and maintain operational efficiency.

The government has officially set an increase in value added tax (VAT) from 11 percent to 12 percent in 2025.

The goods and services charged with the 12 percent VAT rate are goods and services listed in the Minister of Finance Regulation (PMK) Number 15 of 2023 concerning the Imposition of Sales Tax on Luxury Goods (PPnBM).

Minister of Finance Sri Mulyani Indrawati announced that the provision of a 50 percent electricity discount for two months, namely in January 'February 2025, is an effort to protect people's purchasing power due to the increase in VAT to 12 percent.

However, PLN customers with a power of 3,500'6,600 VA, said Sri Mulyani, will still be subject to VAT of 12 percent.
