SURABAYA - The Indonesian Navy (AL) has built a submarine monument with an area of 842.5 meters inside Koarmada II, Surabaya to commemorate the deaths of 53 crew members of KRI Nanggala 402 in the waters north of Bali.

The Chief of Naval Staff (Kasal) Admiral TNI Yudo Margono laid the first stone for the construction of the submarine monument on Thursday.

Yudo said the monument would be built exactly the same size as the shape of KRI Nanggala 402, and it would contain various memories as well as cooperatives.

The location, close to the submarine base, in order to provide new knowledge for outsiders.

"The amount is one to one, it contains the history of development as well as the (history of) the martyrs or heroes who died with KRI Nanggala last April 21," he said, as quoted by Antara, Thursday, June 3.

The plan, said Yudo, is that the construction will last for three months, and it is hoped that it will become a memory for the soldiers after 40 years of service.

"Since 81 years, his struggles and Dharma for his service to the country and nation will be remembered in this monument," he said.

After being built, the monument will also be opened to the public, and it is hoped that it will be remembered that on eternal patrols still exist with the monument.

"So, it's like they are still operating in the sea without limits and the public can know the history of KRI Nanggala 402, because there is also the Jalasveva Jayamahe monument. While there, you can look here," added Yudo.
