US Strikes Iranian Territory Near Iraqi Border

JAKARTA - The United States air raid reportedly targeted an area near the city of Piranshahr in western Iran, which is close to the border with Iraq.

Iranian state media, IRIB, reported on Wednesday, July 29, that the attack hit a location in Western Azerbaijan Province, which was reportedly carried out by the United States.

As reported by ANTARA from Anadolu, so far there have been no reports of casualties or damage due to the attack.

The attack comes amid ongoing tensions in the region, although the situation has been relatively calm since Friday after the latest clashes between the United States and Iran eased.

US President Donald Trump on July 8 declared the ceasefire to be over.

The statement was made after an attack on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz, which Washington accused Tehran of carrying out.

In the escalation, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that it had launched an attack on a number of targets in Iran.

Attack targets include military infrastructure, coastal surveillance systems, missile and drone facilities, naval assets, and logistics centers.

Iran then retaliated by attacking a number of US military facilities and equipment in several Arab countries.

Tensions have flared again despite Washington and Tehran signing a memorandum of understanding in June.

The deal calls for a cessation of hostilities as well as the start of negotiations toward a broader deal to end the war that broke out after Israeli and US attacks on February 28.
