Nazi Honorary Marines During The Attack On The US Capitol Building Sentenced To Nearly 5 Years In Prison

JAKARTA - A Marine who stormed the United States Capitol Building on January 6, 2021, and seemed to salute Nazi-style, was sentenced to nearly five years in prison.

Tyler Bradley Dykes, from South Carolina, was a Marine on active duty while picking up riot shields from two police officers.

He used it to break through police lines during a mob of supporters of President Donald Trump at the time.

Dykes (26) pleaded guilty in April to charges of assault and was previously convicted of crimes stemming from a 2017 White Nationalist Demonstration Unite the Right in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Dykes was transferred to federal custody in 2023 after serving a six-month sentence in state prisons.

US District Judge Beryl Howell sentenced Dykes to four years and nine months in prison, the Justice Department said.

Federal prosecutors previously recommended a five-year three-month prison sentence for Dykes.

"He directly contributes to some of the most extreme violence in the east of the Capitol," the prosecutor wrote.

Dykes' lawyer asked for a sentence of two years in prison. They said Dykes knew his actions on January 6 were "illegal, non-permanent, and intolerable."

"Tyler hates his involvement in the Capitol riots," his lawyer wrote.

"He is fully responsible for his actions. Tyler apologizes for the move," he continued.

Dykes denied he paid Nazi-style tribute on January 6, but prosecutors said his open hand was recorded in the video.

More than 1,400 people have been charged with federal crimes related to the Capitol riots. More than 900 of them have been sentenced, with about two-thirds receiving prison sentences ranging from a few days to 22 years.
