JAKARTA - Canadian police 'beaten up' a small bus driver for an accident that killed 17 elderly people last year. The driver is considered negligent because he stopped in front of a speeding truck.

Authorities said they would not charge the driver with charges, as he suffered a traumatic brain injury.

The accident, one of the worst in Canadian history, occurred in June 2023, about 170 km (105 miles) west of Winnipeg in the central province of Manitoba.

The bus driver, who brought the elderly to the highway intersection "when it was not safe to do so" and the truck then hit the vehicle, police inspector Rob Lasson said.

"It happened because of the choice of the bus driver. However, we cannot prove that the choice that day was a criminal result," he said.

Chris Vanderhooft, a prosecutor who works for the Manitoba government, said blank spots on the bus prevented drivers from seeing the truck.
