BMKG Reminds Sea Waves Of 3.5 Meters South Landa NTT Until May 8

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has asked residents to be aware of sea waves up to 3.5 meters that have the potential to hit the southern region of East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) for the next few days. "Be aware of the 2.5-3.5 meter wave that has the potential to hit the southern Indian Ocean Sumba-Sabu, the southern waters of Kupang-Rote, and the southern Indian Ocean Kupang-Rote," said Acting Head of the Kupang Maritime Meteorological Station, BMKG Agung Sudiono Abadi, quoted by ANTARA, Friday, May 5. He said this was related to maritime weather forecasts in the NTT marine waters which were valid for 6-8 May 2023.AGung said that the high wave potential was at high risk of shipping ferries. Therefore, he said, the ship operator who wanted to cross the sea area to increase awareness of high wave potential that threatens shipping safety. In addition to high waves, continued Agung, several other sea areas in NTT have the potential to be hit by moderate waves (1.25-2.5 meters) namely the western Sumba Strait, Sawu Sea, the northern waters of Kupang-Rote. "A moderate wave also needs to be watched out for because of the high risk of fishing boats and barges," he said.

Regarding the synoptic condition, Agung explained that generally the wind blows from northeast to southeast at a speed of 1-6 on the Beaufort Scale. He also reminded ship operators and fishermen in NTT to continue to monitor the development of maritime weather information from BMKG as a reference to determine shipping activities that are safe from the threat of extreme weather.
