Lanny Jaya Papua Hit By Frost Disaster, BPBD Sends Mitigation Arrangement Team

JAKARTA - The Papua Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) has sent a team to develop further handling of the frost that hit Kuyawage, Lanny Jaya Regency, Papua.

Head of BPBD Papua, Wiliam Manderi, said the team that was deployed would report to his side regarding mitigation and several things needed.

Therefore, he said, BPBD Papua has not assisted the people affected by the disaster. "We are still waiting for the results of the staff report to Kuyawage to confirm the next steps to be taken", he said in Jayapura, Papua, quoted from Antara, Wednesday, August 3.

The two-person team has been dispatched to Wamena. After that, they traveled to Tiom, and together with BPBD Lanny Jaya, continued their journey to Kuyawage.

He explained that reaching Kuyawage can only be done by using a small plane. Based on the reports he received, William said that the frost disaster in Kuyawage affected 548 families.

Meanwhile, the current death toll is four people, two of whom are children.

William ensured that until now no people had evacuated.

Head of the Jayapura Region V Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Center Hendro Nugroho separately asked the community and the Lanny Jaya Regency Government to be alert to the potential for extreme weather, such as frost, hail, and strong winds. During the dry season, the community does not experience a food crisis.

His party just received a report of frost in Lanny Jaya Regency after BPBD Papua on July 29 last. Frost and drought in the Lanny Jaya area occurred in Kuyawage Village, Luarem Village, and Jugu Nomba.

"This condition causes people to experience hunger because the crops have failed to harvest", he said.
