"A total of 23 people have been rescued and are currently being evacuated to Batam Naval Base. However, there was one PMI on behalf of Ahmad who was brought to the Budi Kemuliaan Hospital in Batam City because he was short of breath drinking seawater", he said.

He explained that this incident was first noticed by a local fisherman, Iwan, who had helped several PMIs because his ship sank near Putri Island, Batam on Thursday, June 16 evening.

"He had contacted officers from the Indonesian Navy, and officers immediately came to the location to assist", he said.

After about an hour of searching, officers managed to find 16 PMIs and were immediately taken to Batam Naval Base.

“Officers did not stop searching and managed to find seven more people who were safe. A total of 23 people have been found", he said.
