JAKARTA - DKI Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan revealed the reason why he revitalized the sidewalks on Jalan Jenderal Sudirman several years ago.

He conveyed this when he delivered the Tarawih prayer lecture at the UGM Campus Mosque on Thursday, April 7 evening.

According to Anies, at that time the Sudirman area was an elite area. Only a few people who have interests such as business affairs come to the area.

"Jalan Jenderal Sudirman in Jakarta is the center of business activity. In the past, who went to Jalan Jendral Sudirman who? People who have offices there or people who have business there. Most people who have no business, don't go on that road," said Anies in the UGM Campus Mosque Youtube channel, quoted on Friday, April 8th.

Anies admitted that he has the principle of providing a public space that can be touched by all groups. Therefore, he revitalized the 80 meter wide sidewalk in order to provide interaction space for all residents.

"After the very comfortable sidewalks were built, people from everywhere came and felt this place was ours. You don't have to be a millionaire, you don't have to be a businessman. But ordinary people can enjoy the most elite street in this Republic. That's equality," he said.

From this condition, Anies stated that he wanted to build infrastructure accompanied by the idea of community togetherness. Infrastructure, for Anies, is built for social purposes.

"Build infrastructure with ideas. Not only infrastructure for infrastructure, but the infrastructure for social purposes. There is a sociological idea behind it, behind hard infrastructure. This is what we apply in Jakarta," he said.
