JAKARTA - The Minister of Environment and Forestry (LHK), Siti Nurbaya, said that the construction of the Mentawir Nursery near the capital city of Nusanantara (IKN) will support land rehabilitation efforts that initiated the construction of IKN, by President Joko Widodo's direction.

"The President asked that of the 256 thousand hectares of the entire IKN authority area, 70 percent is natural cover and trees, now there is only 42 percent, so another 28 percent must be added to make everything green", said Minister Siti in a statement received by the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Jakarta, Tuesday 15 March.

This was conveyed by Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti while accompanying President Joko Widodo to review the Mentawir Nursery in North Penajam Paser Regency, East Kalimantan, on Monday, March 14.

Siti explained that it is estimated that 70 percent or covering an area of about 80 thousand hectares will be completed in 2-3 years and the results will be visible in 4-5 years.

"So the IKN concept as a green city will really be seen", she said.

Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK) itself is building a Mentawir Nursery near the IKN core area of 120 hectares, with a nursery and building area of around 32.5 hectares.

The nursery uses the concept of cooperation between the government and business entities (KPBU), namely collaboration between the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR), and the private sector. The nursery can produce 15-20 million seedlings per year.

Later, millions of seeds produced from the Mentawir Nursery will be brought to IKN to be planted in critical lands.

Mentawir nursery in the next 6-7 months is expected to produce 15-20 million tree seedlings, which include nyatoh wood, meranti, lime, agarwood, to guava. By planting these trees, it is hoped that it will attract animals and birds to enter their habitat at IKN.

Previously, President Joko Widodo in a press statement after the review said that the government was committed to starting the IKN development by rehabilitating the surrounding forest.

"This is what I have often said that we will start the development of IKN by rehabilitating existing forests, so that the areas in IKN and its surroundings return to their original functions, namely as tropical forests and not homogeneous monoculture forests", said the President.
