JAKARTA - This year's MTV Europe Music Awards ceremony was canceled due to the ongoing volatility of world events related to the Israeli-Hamas war.

The event is scheduled to take place in Paris at the Paris Nord Villepinte exhibition center on November 5 and the nominations include Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj, and Olivia Rodrigo.

As is known, earlier this month, October 7, Hamas launched an early-day attack on southern Israel which then sparked the Israel-Hamas war.

In a statement announcing the decision, a spokesman for Paramount, the owner of MTV, said: "Given the volatility of world events, we have decided not to continue the 2023 MTV EMA because it is very careful for thousands of employees. crew members, artists, fans, and partners traveling from all over the world to bring this show to life."

The MTV EMA is an annual celebration of global music. When we witness the devastating events that continue to occur in Israel and Gaza, it doesn't feel like a moment to celebrate globally. With thousands of lives lost, this is a moment of mourning.

Even though the ceremony is canceled, the vote will continue and the winner will still receive the award. Organizers said they plan to return in November 2024.
