JAKARTA - Chinese officials warned on Tuesday that cutting ties with his side would be a serious mistake for Argentina, after the country's elected president said he would not deal with Beijing.

Argentine President-elect Javier Milei criticized China and Brazil, which are one of the country's most important trading partners. A few months ago, Milei likened the Beijing government to "killers" and said the Chinese people were "not free".

Diana Mondino, an economist who is expected to become foreign minister in the Milei Administration, was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti that Argentina would not join the BRICS group, which includes China and Russia.

Mondino said Argentina would "stop interacting" with the Chinese and Brazilian governments, when asked if Argentina would encourage exports and imports with these countries.

Argentina itself is among the six countries invited to become new members of BRICS, the alliance bloc whose members also include Brazil, India, and South Africa.

Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Mao Ning said in a regular press conference that the development of bilateral relations with Argentina had shown good momentum, and it was a "serious mistake" for Argentina if it cut ties with countries such as China and Brazil.

"Both sides have a strong economy complementary and great cooperation potential," Mao replied when asked about Mondino's statement.

"China is willing to continue working with Argentina to encourage stability and development of long-term bilateral relations," he continued.

It is known that Milei's strong statement regarding the Bamboo Curtain Country is very different from the cooperation promise conveyed by the president whose term of office will expire soon, Alberto Fernandez.

Last month, President Fernandez visited Beijing and praised China as Argentina's "true friend".

Not only that, President Fernandez also promised coordination with China under a framework such as the G20 and BRICS.
