KPK Will Criminalize Anyone Who Helped Central Mamberamo Regent Escape To Papua New Guinea

JAKARTA - The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will ensnare anyone who helped the escape of Central Mamberamo Regent Ricky Ham Pagawak to Papua New Guinea. Anyone will be charged with Article 21 of the Anti-Corruption Law.

"Reminding that parties should not help hide the suspect because it is punishable by Article 21 of the Anti-Corruption Law," Acting KPK Spokesperson for Enforcement Ali Fikri told reporters in a written statement, Tuesday, August 2.

Article 21 of the Anti-Corruption Law states, "Everyone who intentionally prevents, hinders, or thwarts directly or indirectly the investigation, prosecution and examination in court against suspects and defendants or witnesses in corruption cases, shall be punished with imprisonment of at most short 3 years and maximum 12 years."

In addition to criminal penalties, those who obstruct the investigation can be fined a minimum of IDR 150 million and a maximum of IDR 600 million.

Returning to the KPK, Ali said that his party was still waiting for Ricky's cooperative attitude. He was asked to turn himself in so that the alleged bribery and gratification he committed could be thoroughly investigated.

The KPK has confirmed that the investigation of this case will prioritize the principle of presumption of innocence. Ricky will be given time to defend himself according to the applicable rules.

"KPK urges the suspect RHM to cooperate to surrender himself," said Ali.

"We also emphasize that the handling of the KPK case still upholds the principle of presumption of innocence so that we also pay attention to the rights of the suspect in accordance with the corridors of legal provisions," he continued.

As previously reported, the KPK continues to investigate allegations of bribery and gratification in Central Mamberamo, Papua. Several witnesses have been called and searches have been carried out.

However, in the middle of the process, Ricky, who had not been announced as a suspect, ran away. He is said to have fled to Papua New Guinea by way of a rat with the help of a number of parties, including an aide and two members of the TNI.

Regarding the assistance provided by the TNI, the KPK said it had sent a letter to the Army Chief of Staff (KSAD) to coordinate to examine the two members. Moreover, based on information circulating, a TNI soldier holds the rank of Dandim.

The KPK confirmed that it would continue to pursue Ricky. They did everything they could, including inviting people who knew Ricky's whereabouts to report to the 198 call center or inform the police.
