Has A Chance Of Winning 22nd Grand Slam Title At French Open, Nadal: I'm Not Obsessed But 21 Titles Aren't Enough
JAKARTA - Rafael Nadal said on Wednesday he was still not satisfied with his 21 Grand Slam titles after recording a historic victory at the Australian Open.
Nadal won another Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne after coming back from two sets down to beat Russia's Daniil Medvedev in the final.
The 35-year-old's landmark win took him to the top of the list of the best men's players of all time and is one title ahead of the 20 Grand Slam titles collected by the injured Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic, who was deported from Australia before the tournament began.
The Spaniard can now collect 22 Grand Slam titles from the French Open in June. He has won the tournament 13 times.
"I don't know how many Grand Slams I will have," Nadal told a news conference at his academy in Mallorca.
"Not long ago I signed a contract to be able to play tennis again," he continued.
"I want to be the one who collects the most major tournament titles out of the three of us, I'd love that, but I'm not obsessed, not at all. Whatever comes take it and I don't think 21 titles is enough, to be honest. But you never know what will happen later."
Nadal's comeback against Medvedev also has a wider context, given that he doubts he will ever return to professional tennis after battling a foot injury last year.
The injury limits Nadal from playing just one tournament in the final seven months of 2021. Nadal has said he will decide if he is ready to play at Acapulco in Mexico later this month, but he wants to play Indian Wells in March.

"It still hurts when I play," said Nadal. "But I'm now playing at a higher level than I was more than four weeks ago and this gives me a big confidence boost going forward."
"On a personal level, this is truly an unforgettable experience," added Nadal.
"I can enjoy the sport of the highest level again, which was very difficult to imagine a few weeks ago."
"Apart from achieving something special, for me, it's really special to be able to play at the maximum again against the best players. This is very important for me and for the future."
