JAKARTA - TikTok's parent company, Bytedance, is reportedly planning to develop its Artificial Intelligence (AI) model using chips from a company also from China, namely Huawei.

Based on information from three sources familiar with the plan to Reuters, the switch to chip use was carried out due to restrictions in the US.

Previously, Bytedance used chips from NVIDIA in its AI development. However, due to this restriction, the technology giant from China had to find a supplier of chips from its own country.

But on the other hand, a fourth Reuters source has even confirmed that Bytedance has begun developing its newest AI model using chips from Huawei, although it was not notified of the chip model being used.

ByteDance has ordered more than 100,000 Ascend 910B chips from Huawei this year, which is claimed to be more sophisticated than previous NVIDIA chip models. However, they only received less than 30,000 until July 2024.

Meanwhile, TikTok recently announced its latest collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO), to create reliable content while eradicating health disinformation through the Fides account, a community consisting of professionals in the field of health care.

Through this partnership, Fides network creators in the US, UK, France, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, Mexico, and Brazil will promote the creation of evidence-based content. This network is believed to be able to overcome health challenges in the digital era.
