JAKARTA - The Czech government is considering a ban on the use of cell phones in schools. The rule will not only apply during lessons, but also during breaks, in the canteen, and in after-school activities.

Anadolu Agency, citing Radio Prague International, said on Saturday, July 18, that the government is expected to approve a draft law banning mobile phones and other electronic communication devices in kindergartens, primary schools, and early grades of academic secondary schools.

The draft regulation was submitted by Prime Minister Andrej Babis and Minister of Education Robert Plaga.

The proposal still provides an exemption for students who need electronic devices for medical reasons or special educational needs.

Schools can also allow the use of electronic devices during lessons or school visits if necessary for educational purposes.

However, the Ombudsman for Children Martin Benes assessed that additional legislation was not necessary.

According to Benes, schools actually have enough authority to regulate the use of cell phones by students through their respective regulations.
