JAKARTA – A ban on the use of robocalls, automatic calls, based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be enforced. This is because the commissioners of the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) agreed to ban this technology.

On Wednesday, February 7, the FCC's Declaratory Decision declared  robocalls that use artificial voices or AI to violate the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) making them illegal.

FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel believes the use of robocalls with AI is part of a crime and carries very high risks. The reason is, this type of crime is able to imitate the voices of famous people or their own family.

"AI-generated voices in robocalls, which are not requested (by the owner of the real voice), are used to blackmail vulnerable family members, impersonate celebrities, and misinform voters," said Rosenworcel, quoted by Engadget.

In addition to condemning the irresponsible act, Rosenworcel warned the fraudsters behind the AI robocalls to stop. The reason is, anyone who tries to use this technology will be caught because there is a detection tool.

“The Attorney General now has new tools to crack down on these scams and ensure the public is protected from fraud and misinformation,” Rosenworcel explained. The FCC agency leader did not explain when AI robocalls were officially banned.

The FCC's determination to ban the use of AI robocalls comes after New Hampshire residents received calls with the voice of US President Joe Biden. In the call, Biden seemed to tell New Hampshire residents to stay at home during the election.

“It is important that you save your vote for the November election. "This vote on Tuesday only allows the Republican Party in its efforts to re-elect Donald Trump," said Biden's AI voice, quoted by NBC News.

About 25,000 New Hampshire residents received the calls, according to the state's Attorney General. So far, the phone maker is still under investigation, but evidence points to Texas Life Corporation and Lingo Telecom.
