Shin Tae-yong Said About Asnawi's Mockery To Singapore Striker Who Failed The Penalty: If It Happened Again, He Would Be Expelled From The National Team

JAKARTA - The coach of the Indonesian national team, Shin Tae-yong, reprimanded and gave a stern warning to one of his players, Asnawi Mangkualam. This was done by Shin Tae-yong in the aftermath of Asnawi's actions on the field during the 2020 AFF Cup semifinal match against Singapore.

In the second leg semifinal match which took place on Saturday, December 25, Asnawi was judged to have mocked Singapore striker Faris Ramli for failing to execute a penalty kick. At that time, Asnawi immediately approached and held Faris' body as if he was grateful for the opponent's failure.

The video and photo of Asnawi with Faris then circulated and went viral on social media. Until Shin Tae-yong was asked to express his opinion about that moment.

The South Korean tactician then opened his voice and called the action mocking and dishonorable. What Asnawi considers is the same as the actions of Singapore's reserve players who celebrate against the Indonesian side when a goal is created in the first half.

For this action, Shin Tae-yong gave a stern warning and threatened not to recall Asnawi to the Indonesian national team if he repeated his actions.

"I didn't know (what Asnawi did) at the stadium, but after that, I was surprised when I saw the video," Shin Tae Yong said, quoted by Korean media, Joongang on Wednesday, December 29.

"After lunch, I scolded Asnawi. 'If something like that happens when I am still coaching (the Indonesian national team), I will not call you back to the national team,'" Shin Tae Yong added.

Furthermore, according to Shin Tae-yong what Asnawi did was not something that should have happened. He reminded his team that everyone on the field is a colleague, so the players must behave properly.

"Everyone on the field is a partner, how sad the player is not to be able to score a penalty kick. I said to the team, 'It is unacceptable to celebrate a goal on the opponent's bench'," said Shin Tae-yong.

After giving a stern reprimand to Asnawi, Shin Tae-yong said the player admitted his mistake and promised not to do it again.

After winning in the semifinals over Singapore, the national team advanced to the final round of the AFF Cup 2029 which will also be held over two legs. In this decisive round, the Garuda squad will face Thailand which will be held on December 29 and January 1.
