P3M Holds Halqah Regarding The Importance Of Clean Water Management Policy In Islamic Boarding Schools

JAKARTA - Transformative policies in clean water management have a significant impact on the pesantren world. Unfortunately, so far, the management of water resources in Islamic boarding schools has not received serious attention from various related parties, causing a water crisis that is detrimental to many pesantren.

According to P3M data in 2023, many Islamic boarding schools experienced a clean water crisis, hampering the teaching and learning process and even forcing several students to go home. KH Sarmidi Husna, Director of the Boarding School and Community Development Association (P3M), revealed the importance of policies that can overcome this water crisis in Halaqah Overcoming the Clean Water Crisis in Islamic Boarding Schools.

The importance of water management in an Islamic perspective is also emphasized by Sarmidi. "Water management is an integral part of Islam. In fact, alms are the main worship, especially during drought. Water crisis is not only a problem for the general public, but also for pesantren," he said.

Sarmidi noted that hundreds of Islamic boarding schools, such as the Al-Hadi Lasem Islamic Boarding School, Al-Ibrohimy Sukorejo Islamic Boarding School, Annuriyah Islamic Boarding School, Annur Islamic Boarding School, and Azzahidin Islamic Boarding School, experienced a clean water crisis in 2023. Even Islamic boarding schools outside Java, such as in South Kalimantan, were also affected by drought.

Dr. Ahmad Syafiddin from Nahdlatul Ulama University Surabaya (UNUSA) highlighted the need for clean water, especially in educational institutions such as Islamic boarding schools. UNUSA has launched a Clean and Independent Islamic Boarding School (Bersemi) program to increase awareness and availability of clean water in Islamic boarding schools.

The World Water Forum projects that the water crisis in Indonesia will begin to be felt in 2025, with the threat of losing clean water sources by 2040. To overcome this, P3M and UNUSA synergize in Halaqah to Overcome the Clean Water Crisis in Islamic Boarding Schools, conduct research and formulate strategies with innovative and sustainable approaches.

Islamic boarding schools, as the smallest model of the country, play a crucial role in the challenge of the water crisis. The Center for Environmental Health of Islamic Boarding School (CEHP) initiative, which was founded in 2023, is a significant step in overcoming this problem.

Halaqah about clean water, which was held on Monday, November 27 in Jakarta, is a collaboration between P3M and UNUSA to formulate a strategy for handling the clean water crisis in Islamic boarding schools. The event was attended by the Chancellor of UNUSA Prof. Ahmad Yazidi, as well as representatives from Baznas and the Ministry of Religion.
