JAKARTA - The European Union plans to build an anti-spy bunker worth 8 million euros or equivalent to IDR 120,214,833,920 in Brussels, Belgium in a bid to protect secret talks from eavesdropping.

It is feared that Russia could use a tape recorder to listen to secret talks on European energy as the war in Ukraine continues.

As reported by The National News on July 13, the proposed space can accommodate around 100 people. Later, the room will be equipped with a large screen and conference technology.

In addition, the room will later be enclosed in a NATO (North Atlantic Treaty-Defence) certified isolation cage to ensure conversations are not remotely intercepted.

In the EU memo, seen by the EUobserver website, anyone trying to enter the bunker, including maids and cleaners, will need security clearance from above.

"This will provide an appropriate level of comfort for VIPs (furniture, chairs, etc.) and appropriate courtesy (e.g. flags, but no flowers or other items that are changed frequently)," the memo said of the proposed venue.

"Any new furniture, technical equipment or accessories (flowers, decorations, beverage utilities, etc.) must undergo a TSCM (technical safety countermeasure) inspection," the memo continued.

The current security measure involves representatives handing over their phones before a meeting.

If there are no obstacles and changes, the anti-spy bunker will be built in 2024 at the Council of Europe complex in the Belgian capital.

To note, Belgium expelled two Russians in April over concerns that they were signal-tapping specialists seeking EU secrets.
