Pakistan PM visits Saudi Arabia after Iran-Oman control Hormuz Strait

JAKARTA - The Prime Minister (PM) of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif along with the Commander of the Pakistan Army, Asim Munir, is scheduled to visit Saudi Arabia on August 6-8 local time.

"Despite taking place amid rising tensions in the Gulf region, this visit has a meaning that goes beyond the current crisis and short-term considerations," Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesman Tahir Andrabi said on Thursday, August 6, quoted by AN.

The government of the country in South Asia is indeed actively trying to end the Iran-US conflict, and also involves Gulf countries, including Saudi Arabia.

The Pakistani Foreign Ministry also acknowledged Oman's role, saying that the country had played an important role in resolving the Strait of Hormuz issue.

Iran and Oman are known to have reached an understanding on the geographical coordinates for the shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz. On Wednesday, August 5, the spokesman for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Esmaeil Baghaei, said that a joint announcement regarding this was being finalized, noting that there was no interference from third parties.

Baghaei added that such an agreement between Iran and Oman does not in itself guarantee security in the strategic waterway.

The proposed deal between Iran and Oman would also give Tehran control over ships entering the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to a senior Iranian source and two regional officials this Wednesday, the move was considered one of the biggest concessions ever given to Iran.

Despite the steps that seem to be leading to the fulfillment of Iran's demands, these sources dismissed US President Donald Trump's statement that an agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz would be reached soon, saying that there were still important details to be agreed upon.
