Makassar Regional Disaster Management Agency Urges The Public To Be Aware Of Strong Winds

MAKASSAR - The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Makassar City, South Sulawesi, appealed to the public to increase their awareness of the impact of weather changes, in the form of strong winds for the next three days, following four houses affected by a tornado.

"We urge the public to remain alert to the changing weather conditions for the next three days, with moderate to heavy rains accompanied by strong winds", said Makassar BPBD Chief Executive, Achmad Hendra Hakamuddin, as quoted by Antara on Tuesday, January 18.

He said the impact of the rain which brought light winds had damaged four people's houses in two locations in the area on Tuesday afternoon.

"There are three housing units in Antang Village, Manggala District, then one housing unit in Pampang Village, Panakukang District that was affected", said the former Head of the Makassar City Government Youth and Sports Service.

The impact of damage to residents' houses due to strong winds has been assessed by the BPBD team so that they can receive assistance from the government.

His party asked residents to remain on disaster alert, considering that the BMKG had issued an early warning of the potential for moderate to heavy rain from January 18-20, 2022.

Previously, BMKG (Meteorological, Climatological, and Geophysical Agency) Region IV Makassar, South Sulawesi had issued an early warning on weather forecasts for the next three days, January 18-20, 2022.

The South Sulawesi region has the potential to rain with high intensity in Makassar City, Parepare, Soppeng, Barru, Pangkajene and Islands, Maros, Gowa, Takalar, Jeneponto, and Selayar Islands Regencies.

Forecaster of BMKG Region IV Makassar, Rizky Yudha, in his written statement, conveyed that from the results of the analysis of atmospheric dynamics, it was observed that the pattern of air mass gatherings and wind bends in the South Sulawesi region could increase.

"Meanwhile, the results of the analysis of the development of the rainy season until Dasarian I January 2022 show that 75 percent of the seasonal zones in the South Sulawesi region have entered the rainy season", he said.

The intensity of moderate to heavy rain has the potential to occur in the districts of Bantaeng, Bulukumba, Sinjai, Bone, Pinrang, Sidrap, and North Luwu. Likewise, there is the potential for strong winds to occur in the western, southern, and eastern coastal areas of South Sulawesi.
