RI Praised By The World For Dare To Close TikTok Shop, Minister Teten: America Alone Can't

JAKARTA - Minister of Cooperatives and SMEs (Menkop UKM) Teten Masduki said, Indonesia received praise from the world for being able to close the TikTok Shop service.

This was revealed by Teten in a working meeting (raker) with Commission VI of the DPR RI in Jakarta, Thursday, November 23.

"The issue (of cessation) of TikTok in Indonesia is praised by the world because America alone cannot solve TikTok (problems)," said Teten.

Teten said Indonesia's digital economy has enormous potential.

In fact, he said, the largest value in Southeast Asia, which is projected to reach around 5,400 trillion by 2030.

However, he continued, the current condition is worrying because Indonesia's e-commerce revenue as much as 60 percent has been controlled by foreign platforms.

"In fact, almost 85 percent of the media's confession was controlled by foreign platforms. Therefore, we propose that there be a separation between social media and e-commerce at that time," said Teten.

He considered that this could happen due to the wrong use of personal data, namely the use of social media user data for e-commerce purposes, such as TikTok Shop.

In fact, according to Teten, as many as 123 million TikTok users intend to enjoy social media content only and not for shopping.

"Because, actually, I just want to find social pleasure in making short videos, dancing with office friends, family, all kinds of things," he said.

Therefore, President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) ordered him to formulate a digital economy policy two years ago.

The aim is to protect domestic, e-commerce, and MSME and consumer industries.

So that the government chooses a way to separate social media and e-commerce platforms.

"So the closure (TikTok Shop) has two reasons, one is indeed violating the rules, second is that the new rules cannot combine social media with e-commerce so that there is the same playing field," he added.
