BMKG Urges Coastal Residents Of High Waves Up To 4 Meters
JAKARTA - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) appealed to coastal communities to be aware of the potential for high waves of up to four meters in several water areas on August 6-7, 2023.
"We ask people who live and work on the coast around areas where high waves are likely to occur to remain vigilant," said Head of the Maritime Meteorology Center, BMKG quoting from Antara, Sunday, August 6.
He said the wind pattern was one of the causes of opportunities for high wave increase.
He said the wind pattern in the northern part of Indonesia was dominantly moving from the south-southwest with wind speeds ranging from 5-25 knots, while in the southern part of Indonesia it was dominantly moving from east-southeast with wind speeds ranging from 5-25 knots.
"The highest wind speed was observed in the Makassar Strait, Bitung-Likupang waters, waters of Kep. Sitaro, waters north of Sorong, southern waters of Sermata-Tanimbar, Arafuru Sea," he explained.
This condition, he continued, caused an opportunity to increase waves as high as 1.25-2.5 meters in the eastern waters of Nias and Kep. Mentawai, Teluk Lampung, Kupang-P. Rotte waters, Savu Sea, southern Flores waters, Natuna Sea, Karimata Strait, and Java Sea.
In addition, the southern waters of Kalimantan, the southern Makassar Strait, the waters of Kota Baru, the Sumbawa Sea, the waters of Kep. Selayar, the southern Bone Bay, the Flores Sea, Wakatobi waters, Manui-Kendari waters, the southern waters of Banggai-Sula, the southern waters of Southeast Sulawesi.
Then, Bitung-Likupang-Sitaro waters, Sangihe-Talaud waters, Maluku Sea, Halmahera waters, Halmahera Sea, North Pacific Ocean Halmahera-Papua, southern waters of P. Buru-P. Seram, eastern Seram Sea, Fakfak-Kaimana waters, Banda Sea, waters of Kep. Kai-Kep. Aru, waters of Kep. Sermata-Kep. Tanimbar, waters of Agats-Ammapere, eastern Arafuru Sea, northern waters of West Papua-Papua.
