California Governor Emphasizes Importance of New Skills in the Field of Generative AI

JAKARTA - California Governor, Gavin Newsom, emphasized the importance for society to stay ahead of the curve in generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) by acquiring new skills and becoming familiar with emerging technologies.

As outlined in the report, it is recommended that California residents should have access to educational and training opportunities in the field of GenAI.

"To support California's state government workforce and prepare the next generation of skills needed to thrive in a GenAI economy, agencies will provide training for state government workers to use state-approved GenAI to achieve equitable outcomes," Newsom said.

The report states that this proposal is considered important in response to the significant employment impacts indicated by recent reports on GenAI.

The report cites Goldman Sachs estimates, which indicate that GenAI is expected to impact 300 million jobs worldwide despite the potential productivity gains it hopes to achieve.

"Therefore, the State must take the lead in training and supporting workers, enabling them to participate in the artificial intelligence economy and creating demand for businesses to locate and hire in California," the report said.

Furthermore, the report states that GenAI education initiatives should begin in higher education institutions and vocational schools.

Recently, there have been several reports on the potential impact of artificial intelligence on jobs in the global economy.

On July 12, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) released a report outlining the jobs most at risk from artificial intelligence.

The study cited “high-skilled, white-collar jobs” as those most exposed to artificial intelligence.
