JAKARTA - Last week, Blizzard Entertainment announced that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II players will be required to register with a phone number on Battle.net to play the game.

Blizzard says that these actions were created to hold players accountable for their actions in the game. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II itself will be released later this month on October 28.

This policy is seen as similar to what Blizzard did with Overwatch 2 players. "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, the newly created Overwatch 2 account, and the newly created Call of Duty: Modern Warfare account, require you to add a phone number to your Battle account. your .net," Blizzard wrote on its Battle.net page.

Apart from the aforementioned games, you don't need to enter a phone number to play. But the studio said there might be some games, such as World of Warcraft, to use certain features.

The studio revealed that the phone verification or SMS protect system was used to limit the number of free accounts one person could create and help keep players accountable for their actions.

"And in turn, reducing toxicity and cheating and ensuring a positive community experience for all players."

The problem is, this SMS Protect doesn't work on all phone numbers. In a separate Battle.net note, they state that phones with prepaid cards cannot receive notifications.

A Modern Warfare II beta player told PCGamer last month that they were asked for a postpaid phone number to start the game.
