JAKARTA - Instagram announced on Thursday, June 23 that it is testing a new option for users to verify a user's age on the platform. This new feature will start for netizens in the United States.
The photo-sharing service owned by Meta Platform Inc said it was testing two new ways to verify a person's age, in addition to allowing them to upload proof of their identity online.
"When we know someone is a teenager (13-17 years old), we provide them with age-appropriate experiences such as logging them into a personal account, preventing unwanted contact from adults they don't know and limiting the options advertisers have to reach them with ads," said Erica Finkle, Director of Data Governance at Meta, in a blog post.
According to a Reuters report, Instagram said it had partnered with Yoti, a company that specializes in online age verification to ensure user privacy.

Users can upload a selfie video to verify their age, after which Yoti's technology estimates their age based on facial features. According to Instagram, both Meta and Yoti will delete images once age is verified.
Another option is for people to select three shared followers to confirm the user's age, and the person vouching must be at least 18 years old.
The move comes after Instagram halted the launch of Instagram Kids last year, after receiving criticism and opposition to the project.
Instagram Kids is said to require parental consent to join, and is supposed to provide age-appropriate, ad-free content. But US lawmakers and advocacy groups have urged the company to scrap its planned launch, citing security concerns.
