YOGYAKARTA - Yogyakarta Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) has recaptured an estuarine crocodile with an estuary of 138 centimeters on the Oya River, Gunungkidul Regency, Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY). This crocodile was released from quarantine.
Head of the Yogyakarta BKSDA Lukito Awang Nistyantara said the crocodile that was released was in quarantine at Flora Fauna Bunder Station on March 23, 2023.
"The joint team consists of the Yogyakarta BKSDA (RKW Playen, Keeper SFF Rounder), Playen Police, SAR Gading, Manahati volunteers conducted a sweep. On Monday, April 3, 2023, at around 09.00 WIB, the crocodile was again observed sunbathing on the banks of the Oya River. After that, an arrest was made," said Lukito in Gunungkidul, Antara, Monday, April 3.
He told the chronology of the release of crocodiles, namely on Wednesday 23 March 2023 at around 20.00 WIB, an estuarine crocodile located at Flora Fauna Station (SFF) Bunder disappeared from the quarantine cage.
This was only realized by SFF Bunder officers on Thursday morning, March 24, 2023 when feeding the animals. The cause of the crocodile's disappearance is thought to be due to high rainfall so that the water in the quarantine cage overflows.
Officers tried to find the animal by walking along the location around the Bunder SFF complex by fishing using feed. The sweeping was also carried out by walking along the Oya River which is not far from the SFF Bunder complex.
On Friday, March 31, 2023, a resident of Bunder, Triyono, who was fishing in the Oya River, saw a crocodile sunbathing. Yogyakarta BKSDA officers, especially Keepers, tried to catch these animals with the help of the community and NGOs.
"The Yogyakarta BKSDA has also coordinated with the Playen Police to take the next steps," said Lukito.
Furthermore, he said that Keeper SFF Bunder, assisted by officers from the Gunungkidul Police, continued to try to catch by fishing for animals with chicken meat.
"The BKSDA team together with the Playen Police and the Gunungkidul Lawsuit Volunteers (ICG) finally managed to catch and evacuate crocodiles on Monday (3/4) at around 11.20 WIB not far from yesterday's crocodile encounter," he said.
Lukito Awang Nistyantara said his party would organize and perfect the quarantine cage. SFF Bunder itself is a transit place for animals and rehabilitation of animals produced by community and confiscated animals.
"Efforts to save animals require coordination and cooperation with the parties. Good communication is established with the community to help
"Speed up the process of saving animals in the field," he said.
