JAKARTA - The leader of the Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, said with confidence that the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, would be captured by Russian troops, after liberating other cities.

In his statement Monday morning, Kadyrov said there would be attacks by Russian forces, not only on the besieged port of Mariupol, but also in Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities.

"There will be attacks, not only in Mariupol, but also elsewhere, towns and villages," Kadyrov said in a video posted on his Telegram channel.

"Luhansk and Donetsk, we will completely liberate in the first place, and then take Kyiv and all other cities," he continued.

Kadyrov, who often describes himself as a 'foot soldier' of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said there was no doubt about Kyiv.

"I assure you: not a single step will be taken again," said Kadyrov.

It is known that Ramzan Kadyrov has been repeatedly accused by the United States and the European Union of rights violations, with Kadyrov's repeated denials.

Long before that, Moscow fought two wars with separatists in Chechnya, a Muslim-majority region in southern Russia, after the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.

But it has since poured large sums of money into the region to rebuild it and give Kadyrov broad autonomy.

Describing its actions in Ukraine as special military operations targeting demilitarization and denazification, Russia on Sunday intensified its attacks in Eastern Ukraine.
