Beware Of Buying Fake Cosmetics, East Java Police Arrest Perpetrators Of Counterfeiting Cosmetic Brands

SURABAYA - The East Java Regional Police's Special Criminal Investigation Directorate I Sub-Directorate Team for Investigation arrested a Tuban resident with the initials BS (33), a suspect for counterfeiting KLT cosmetics.

"The suspect BS was arrested at a store warehouse called Cheap Cosmetics located on Jalan Lebak Timur Surabaya," said Head of Public Relations of the East Java Police, Kombes Dirmanto, as quoted by Antara, Friday, April 8.

BS was arrested for intentionally producing and or distributing fake cosmetics that do not meet several things such as standards, safety, efficacy or benefits, quality, and does not have a distribution permit.

From the disclosure, the East Java Police confiscated hundreds of evidence of fake cosmetics branded KLT.

Meanwhile, Head of Sub-Directorate for Indagsi, Ditreskrimsus, Polda Jatim, AKBP Oki Ahadian, explained that the suspect's modus operandi was to fake an official brand and have a distribution permit.

"The suspect BS has been doing this business since 2019. According to information, the suspect used to work in KLT. After stopping, the suspect did counterfeiting KLT products," said AKBP Oki.

According to him, from the proceeds of the crime, the suspect made a profit of IDR 570 million with only raw materials such as alcohol, water, bar soap, and food coloring.

"This suspect also trades in online media at a cheaper price. The price of an original KLT package can be hundreds of thousands of rupiah, but by the suspect, the product is sold for IDR 90 thousand. So KLT consumers run to the suspect's product," he said.

For his actions, the suspect was charged with multi-layered articles, namely Article 106 of Law Number 7 of 2014 concerning Trade, and Article 196 of Law Number 36 of 2009 concerning Health, and Article 197 of Law Number 8 of 1999 concerning Consumer Protection.
