JAKARTA - TikTok, which is owned by ByteDance, has agreed to permanently withdraw the TikTok Lite reward program from the European Union to comply with the bloc's Digital Service Act (DSA). This was said by the European Commission on Monday, August 5.

TikTok Lite has a "Green Program" that allows users to get points while doing certain tasks on the platform, such as watching videos, liking content, following creators, or inviting friends to join.

The European Union in April asked TikTok for an immediate risk assessment of the app shortly after its launch in France and Spain. They are concerned about its impact on children and the mental health of users.

Under DSA, large online platforms are required to report potential risks from new functions to the European Union before launching and must adopt effective measures to address these risks.

The EU executive branch said TikTok had now made a legally binding commitment to withdrawing gift programs from the European Union and not launching other programs that could circumvent the decision.

"Any violation of this commitment will soon be considered a violation of the DSA and could lead to a fine," the commission said.

Another investigation into whether TikTok violates online content rules aimed at protecting children and ensuring transparent advertising is still ongoing. The investigation opened in February and could confront the social media platform at the risk of a large fine.
