JAKARTA Dell Technologies and Super Micro Computer will provide server shelves for supercomputers being built by Elon Musk's artificial intelligence startup, xAI. This announcement was made by the US entrepreneur on social media platform X on Wednesday, June 19.

"Dell will assemble half of the server rack for xAI supercomputers," Musk said in X. In response to a question about the second partner, Musk called "SMC" - which refers to the Super Micro server maker.

The San Francisco-based Super Micro, known for its close ties to chip companies such as Nvidia and its liquid cooling technology, confirmed its partnership with xAI.

Dell CEO Michael Dell also said in a separate post on X that the company is building an AI plant with Nvidia that will support the latest version of the xAI chatbot, Grok.

Musk has informed investors that his artificial intelligence startup, xAI, plans to build a supercomputer to support the next version of its AI chatbot, Grok, according to a report by The Information in May.

AI model training such as xAI's Grok requires tens of thousands of power-hungry chips and is currently in limited supply. Earlier this year, Musk revealed that the training of the Grok 2 model required around 20,000 units of Nvidia H100 GPU, and that the Grok 3 model would require 100,000 Nvidia H100 chips.

Musk stated that he wanted the proposed supercomputer to run in the fall of 2025. Musk founded xAI last year as a challenger for Alphabet's Microsoft-backed OpenAI and Google. Musk is also one of the founders of OpenAI.
