White House Targets Clean Zero Emissions In The Transportation Sector By 2050

JAKARTA The administration of US President Joe Biden has set a new target to reduce carbon emissions. They want to achieve zero emissions by 2050 using zero-emissions transport vehicles.

Through the official White House website, the US government said that the transportation sector was the largest contributor to climate pollution in the US. When explored, nearly a quarter of the emissions produced came from vehicles such as buses and trucks.

Therefore, the US will develop a zero-emission transport strategy that includes a transition to the use of trucks, trains, aircraft, and ships without emissions. This strategy will involve the entire US government.

"This strategy will prioritize measures to address hotspots of air pollution and address the climate crisis, mobilize various government resources, and reflect public participation and meaningful community engagement," the White House wrote.

The use of zero-emissions freight transport will be in line with Biden's goal of achieving carbon pollution-free in the energy sector by 2035. The country's leaders are also targeting achieving net zero emissions in the transportation sector by 2050.

It is hoped that zero-emission industrial trucks will sell as much as 30 percent by 2030 and 100 percent by 2040. This sales target must go into a strategy to, "identify the possible path and implementation (for) vehicles."

As part of the commitment to net zero emissions in the transportation sector, the government launched several major funding programs, such as the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) which announced a funding opportunity of US$1 billion (Rp16 trillion).

These funds can be used by cities, states, or tribes to replace heavy-duty vehicles in grades 6 and 7, which include school buses, garbage trucks, and shipping trucks. All of these vehicles must be zero-emission vehicles.

"Proyeks supported through this program will reduce air and sound pollution, improve public health, and create jobs for clean energy with good salaries," explained the White House.
