JAKARTA - Meta Platforms CEO Mark Zuckerberg met with LG Electronics executives to discuss stronger partnerships in the development of the longest reality device (XR) as well as potential cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI), LG said.

Zuckerberg arrived in South Korea on Tuesday evening 27 February and is expected to hold talks on AI and meet South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and the country's leading chief technology company.

According to LG Electronics in a statement, the Meta CEO held discussions with LG Electronics CEO William Cho and COO of LG Corp's parent company Kwon Bong-seok, regarding business strategies related to the development of next-generation XR devices.

Cho also expressed interest in Meta's big language model-based AI technology and discussed the possibility of AI cooperation on devices, the company said. Cho previously stated that LG Electronics was looking for opportunities in the XR sector.

Meta unveiled its newest mixed reality headset, Quest 3, in June before its rival, Apple, which increased competition this month with its Vision Pro device.

The company is also stepping up efforts in the AI sector this year, including plans to create custom chips and add AI-function to its products.

Zuckerberg made his first visit to South Korea after about 10 years later. This is part of a tour of Asian countries covering Japan and India, South Korean media reported.

Zuckerberg is widely expected to discuss the supply of AI chips and expand ecosystems for generative AI during his visit to South Korea, as Meta seeks to bring a generating AI technology to its core social media and hardware products this year.

Meta also plans to implement to their data center this year a new version of custom chips aimed at supporting their AI boosts. They also plan to secure about 350,000 H100 graphics processing units from leading AI chipmaker Nvidia, by the end of this year to support the push.
