Intel Releases NUC Business, Chooses To Focus On Working On A More Beneficial Chipset

JAKARTA - Intel has announced its resignation from the Next Unit of Computing (NUC) business with plans to focus on a much more profitable chip business.

NUC is a compact and small device that gives users complete experience, just like any other PC. The device is sent with all components, such as processors, memory, SSD, and support for graphics.

The company asks partners, such as Dell and HP, to continue to create a Small Form-Factor (SFF)-based Personal Computer (PC) and play an active role in ensuring that the business continues to grow.

"We have decided to stop direct investment in Next Unit of Compute (NUC) Business and change our strategy to allow our ecosystem partners to continue NUC innovation and growth," an Intel spokesperson said in an email.

This decision will not affect Intel's Client Computing Group (CCG) or Network and Edge Computing (NEX) business. In addition, we are working with our partners and customers to ensure smooth transition and fulfill all of our current commitments, including ongoing support for NUC products currently in the market," he added.

Intel's move seems reasonable, given the company has been refocusing on its core business over a period where they are also investing heavily in manufacturing operations and its own casting business.

According to Anandtech, Wednesday, July 12, Intel entered the PC business with an ultra-compact NUC desktop in 2013, which at the time, the company was also out of the motherboard market.

Initially, the company only targeted SOHO markets with a barebone and PC NUC, but eventually expanded the reach of NUC with systems for corporate users who needed things like remote management and appropriate support, and even game machines.

However, Intel's OEM partner or rival has not remained silent so far, and the tech giant is lagging behind in some areas.

None of Intel's NUCs have ever switched to be empowered via USB Type-C, and the newer Intel NUCs have struggled to differentiate themselves from competitions.
