Due to Continuing War, Dell Decides to Cease All Operations in Russia

JAKARTA - Dell Technologies Inc. announced on Saturday, August 27 that it had suspended all operations in Russia after closing its offices in mid-August. This is the latest decision by a growing number of Western companies to exit Russia.

This US computer company is an important supplier of servers in Russia. They have joined other companies in curbing operations since Moscow sent tens of thousands of troops to Ukraine on February 24.

Dell suspended sales in Ukraine and Russia in February, and said it would monitor the situation to determine next steps.

"In mid-August, we closed our offices and suspended all operations in Russia," Dell spokesman Mike Siemienas told Reuters.

"Back in February, we made the decision not to sell, service or support products in Russia, Belarus and the Donetsk and Luhansk regions of Ukraine, in addition to the already embargoed Crimea," Siemienas added.

Russia annexed the Crimean Black Sea peninsula from Ukraine in 2014 and recognized the breakaway republics in eastern Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk regions in February. The move was condemned by Ukraine and Western countries, which have now imposed sanctions on Russia.

Russia's Ministry of Industry said on Friday, August 26, that many researchers and engineers working for Dell in Russia had been offered new jobs, after media reports said the company would leave completely.

Tech media CNews this week reported that Dell will be completely out of Russia and will lay off all of its local staff. IT-focused news portal TAdviser also published a similar report.

"We are monitoring the development of the situation," Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade, Vasily Shpak, said on Friday, the TASS news agency reported.

"According to our data, most of Dell's R&D center specialists and support engineers in St. Petersburg and Moscow have received job offers with competitive salaries from Russian manufacturers," he added.
