JAKARTA - Today's Doodle Today is commemorating the 171 year anniversary of the man who was born on June 6, 1851, Angelo Morindo. This man from Turin, Italy is the figure behind the creation of the espresso machine that we know today.

Morindo was born from a family of entrepreneurs who never stop developing new ideas or projects. Morindo's father continued his father's (Morindo's grandfather) business in a liquor production company. Later, his father founded the popular chocolate company, "Moriondo and Gariglio" with his brothers and cousins.

Following in the footsteps of his family, Morindo bought two places, namely the Grand Hotel Ligure which is located in the center of Piazza Carlo Felice and the American Bar at the Galleria Nazionale on Via Roma.

The Invention of the Espresso Machine by Angelo Morindo

The coffee we know today is not instantly a drink that can be consumed. To produce coffee that can be enjoyed, there must be such a thing as grinding coffee beans with hot water.

In 19th century Italy, coffee was the hottest item around. Unfortunately, the method of making it requires customers to wait for more than five minutes to get their drink.

Despite the popularity of coffee in Italy, the sheer amount of time spent making one cup of coffee seems to make customers uncomfortable. Because of this, Morindo thought that making several cups of coffee at once would allow it to serve more customers more quickly.

After that Morindo teamed up with a mechanic named Martina, and enlisted her to make an invention. Morindo exhibited his invention, an espresso machine at the General Expo Turin in 1884. At that time, he managed to get a bronze medal for his invention.

The machine itself is made up of a large kettle that pushes hot water through the layers of coffee grounds, and a second boiler that produces steam that will ignite the layers of coffee and finish brewing. With his invention, Morindo received a patent entitled, "A new steam engine for economical and instant coffee beverage confection, method 'A. Moriondo'." Then, Moriondo continued to improve and patent his inventions in the following years.

Next year

In the following years, in 1901 to be exact, an entrepreneur from Milan, Luigi Bezzera began to develop an existing espresso machine. Until now, Luigi is known as the Father of Espresso because he is considered the father of the espresso revolution.

Actually, Luigi is not someone who works in the coffee field. Luigi's main reason is because he is a factory owner, Luigi feels his time is stolen a lot by the workers during coffee breaks. So, Luigi created a coffee machine to shorten the coffee break time for the workers.

Then in 1905, Desiderio Pavoni bought the patent for the espresso machine and introduced it to the Italian market. Not only did Desidero buy an espresso machine from Luigi, but Desidero also experimented with various temperatures and pressures, and tried to reduce the excessive bitterness.

But unfortunately, the engine made by Desidero is also still less than perfect. Then in 1938, Achille Gaggia made an espresso machine that produced cream or a layer of foam on top of the espresso. Until now, the Gaggia brand espresso machine is the most famous espresso machine in the world.

In 1950, a coffee machine company from Italy called FAEMA (Fabbrica Apparecchiature Elettromeccaniche e Affini) made an espresso machine with a pump system. Just like Gaggia, this espresso machine is still being sold in the market today.
