JAKARTA Ukrainian heavyweight boxing world champion Oleksandr Usyk has officially received a contract from the Ukrainian professional football club FC Polissya.
The ruler of the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO, and IBO titles previously appeared as substitutes for the club in a friendly match.
He then got a one-year contract with the first division team. At the club Usyk will wear the number 17 jersey.
"The club president Hennadiy Butkevich and Oleksandr Usyk have signed an official agreement for one year of football cooperation," read a club statement quoted by The Sun.
Usyk had previously promised that he would sign a contract if the club got promoted. The club then managed to promote and Usyk kept his promise.
However, Usyk's involvement with the team is still unclear. The club in their statement said other details related to the contract with the boxer would be clarified later.
Usyk will return to the ring on August 26 nearest in Poland against Daniel Dubois. This is his first duel after two straight wins over Anthony Joshua in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
The duel with Dubois comes after talks failed earlier this year for a four-weight belt unification battle with Tyson Fury.
Usyk and Fury failed the duel because there was no common ground regarding the distribution of rematch compensation. Fury, 34, will now face former UFC champion Francis Ngannou, 36, on October 24 in Saudi Arabia.
