Greenwood Becomes Rape Suspect

JAKARTA - Manchester United striker Mason Greenwood has finally been named a suspect and officially detained. Police questioned him for several days on suspicion of sexual assault and death threats by the 20-year-old player.

Citing Antara, Wednesday, February 2, the striker was initially arrested on Sunday afternoon on suspicion of raping and assaulting a young woman following the posting of pictures and video footage of the incident on social media.

Greenwood was briefly detained overnight on Monday after Greater Manchester Police (GMP) detectives launched an investigation and questioned the player, whom they have not officially named a suspect.

Police said in a statement on Tuesday: "Detectives have been given additional time to speak to a man in his 20s who was arrested on suspicion of raping and assaulting a woman."

"The suspect was taken into custody on Sunday afternoon after we saw pictures and videos posted on social media by a woman reporting an incident of physical abuse."

"He continues to be questioned after the judge allowed an extension to Wednesday, February 2."

"Following the investigation so far, he is officially detained on suspicion of sexual assault and death threats."

Hours after the allegations surfaced on Sunday, Greenwood, considered one of England's rising stars, was suspended from playing or training with the club until further announcements.

Sportswear giant Nike also said it had suspended its agreement with player and video game developer EA Sports to remove Greenwood from the active FIFA 22 squad.
