Volkswagen Intends To Maintain The Name "GTI" For Electric Vehicles

JAKARTA - Currently, well-known automotive manufacturers are actively trying to bring electrified vehicles to the future. In fact, some of them chose to revive the legendary names on the latest EV model.

One of them is Ford, which reintroduces the name Puma and Transit for its electric model. German producer Volkswagen also did not miss his decision to restore the iconic name "GTI".

VW is rumored to be renewing the "GTI" logo for its electric car and has submitted it to the German Patent and Trademark Office, reported by CarBuzz, Monday, July 31. This legendary name will appear in the last letter replaced by a symbolic lightning pattern.

Of course, "GTI" is a very meaningful name for VW and is usually applied to models with a variant or high performance, as we know from GTI Golf in the past.

It is important to note that "GTI" stands for "Grand Touring Injection", which refers to a fuel machine. However, VW wants to keep this iconic name in their future high-performance EV model, so that its final letter is replaced with a lightning symbol.

If these rumors are true, VW plans to replace the name "GTX" as a high-performance variant with "GTI". However, there are also other possibilities, where the name "GTX" will still be used for electric vehicle models, while "GTI" will be embedded in models that are partially electrified or hybrid.

However, we have to remember VW's plan to bring full electric vehicles by the end of the decade, so it's a bit unfortunate if GTI's name lasts only a few moments if it's only used for hybrid models.

What's more, VW is trying to maintain the presence of their iconic hatchback, Golf, which will launch as a full electric car by the end of the decade.

The celebration of the 50th anniversary of GTI Golf in Europe in 2025 is an important moment. It is estimated that the current GTI generation will be maintained until the celebration, with VW planning to release a special edition model.

It is hoped that VW ID.2all will be the preview version of the next GTI Golf generation. This concept car has compact dimensions and designs reminiscent of classical Golf, so it will be the first Golf model in electric cars.
