JAKARTA - This airport has just been named the best in Europe by the World Travel Awards. Not for the first time, but this airport has succeeded in being the best for the last 18 years in a row.

This year, Zurich airport was praised for implementing various health and safety protocols to keep travelers and employees safe during the COVID-19 pandemic. This includes providing plexiglass panels at check-in counters and more than 200 cleaning stations with masks and disinfectants.

The airport is only 11 minutes by train from the city center, which makes it quick and easy to reach by train or car. The infrastructure is modern, with over 80 shops to explore and fast WiFi connections available for free use for up to two hours.

"In these difficult times, in particular, this award is a great honor for us. It is an acknowledgment of the excellent cooperation between all our airport partners and the great commitment of everyone who works at Zurich Airport," said CEO Flughafen Zürich AG, Stephan Widrig, citing Euronews October 25.

Zurich Airport is also one of the pioneers in the field of climate protection in 2021, according to Emanuel Fleuti, Head of Sustainability & Environment at the airport.

Having started in 1991 to assess energy consumption and climate emissions, to date Zurich Airport has reduced its carbon emissions by almost 50 percent. This is in line with Switzerland's national commitment to 2030 in the Paris Agreement. During this time, traffic and infrastructure increased by nearly 60 percent.

The World Travel Awards is a prestigious program that recognizes industry leaders in the tourism, aviation, hotel, and hospitality sectors. It is considered a leading authority in celebrating excellence in all sectors of global travel and tourism.

Which other countries won the award this year? Portugal won numerous awards, including "Europe's Leading Beach Destination" for the Algarve and "Europe's Leading Tourist Destination" for the Azores.

Russia also tops the list, with Moscow City winning "Europe's Leading City Destination" and Saint Petersburg being named "Europe's Leading Rest Destination City."

Meanwhile, the Land of the Greek Gods won the much-coveted award in the category "Europe's Leading Destination."
